Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest

To commemorate the life of an American hero, LaMar Educational Enterprises LLC., sponsors The Contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest for children 11 to 14 years old. The first place prizewinner will receive a $300.00 bookstore gift certificate. Second and third place winners will receive $200.00 and $100.00 bookstore gift certificates, respectively.

To enter, children ages 11-14 must submit two copies of a 250 to 500 word essay on: "What Would Martin Luther King, Jr. Say to President Barack Obama as President Obama Begins His Second Term?"All essays must be: (1) typewritten, (2) double spaced, (3) submitted with a cover sheet that includes (a)  the entrantís full name, (b) complete address, (c) phone number, and (d) the parent or guardianís name and (e) signature granting the child permission to enter the contest.

And (4) the entrantís name should only appear on the cover sheet and not on the essay. Only submissions that meet all of the above criteria will be considered for an award. Entries must be postmarked on or before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 21st, 2013 and sent to:

The essays will be read and ranked by three judges using the following criteria: 1) thoughtfulness, 2) vocabulary and style, 3) grammar, punctuation, and spelling, 4) clarity, and 5) neatness. All entries become the property of LaMar Educational Enterprises, LLC. Winners will be notified by February 18th.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. essay contest is part of LaMar Educational Enterprises, LLC. outreach effort and is offered to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the positive values and character he exemplified. All prizes are funded by The Oglethorpe Foundation which was created in honor of Dr. LaMarís father, the late Ansley Oglethorpe LaMar, a retired New York City sanitation worker who loved to read.
